GFF 2025
Young Film Makers' Program

FILMING TIPS

HOW TO FILM

  • Use a phone or iPad - set to VIDEO

  • Hold the camera horizontally (sideways) to film your friend, follow them if they go somewhere (this can be fun)

  • OR prop phone on something: table, chair, car roof, tree and you can record you and your friend together.

  • Get another friend/mum/sister to follow you both with the phone

HOW TO RECORD SOUND

Just use the mic in the phone, the one you talk into when you make calls - but don't stand next to something loud - air conditioner, car, lawn mower. If you have to, speak up!

You can borrow the sound recording kit from school, and clip a microphone on your friend's shirt so you can hear them speak even from far away, ask your teacher to help set this up.

OTHER FILMING TIPS

Don’t worry if cam angle is a bit wonky, nobody cares

Don’t worry if the dog knocks the cam over, or your forget what you were going to say or something goes wrong.

These docos are meant to be real life (in real life things go wrong all the time).

HOW TO EDIT

  • Use iMovie (on iPads or iPhone) or an app such as KineMaster, VivaVideo, or InShot (Android) to select and trim good bits and put together in order.

  • Don't add music, we want to hear what people are saying, the sounds of the bush and animals etc

  • If you don't have the ability to cut it on an app, just upload individual clips and we will put it together for you - reach out to our team to help!

HOW TO ENTER

  • We will send an upload link in March. All films need to be uploaded by April 13

EXAMPLES FROM LAST YEAR'S PROGRAM

NOTE FOR TEACHERS & PARENTS

Gil Film Festival was established in 2023 as a documentary film festival. This young film makers' program is to encourage primary age students to learn how to film their lives - up to 5 minutes in length.

The aim is not to make polished or professional looking films, but to 'catch' a moment of truth, something that touches and connects with an audience. This is what every great documentary maker tries to do! Students can add music and narration when editing, titles and FX if it interests them - but it is not the primary learning objective of this program - and it can spoil the impact for the story.

These notes are guide only - we are happy to screen any imaginative interpretation.
